An error occurred while updating the branding files! Please restart the Online Banking Setup Wizard to initiate the update process again.

There can be various factors due to which this error can occur and one of them is the Financial Institution Directory is not updated to add your bank information or it is not saved in the required location.

Resolving QuickBooks Banking Errors

There are multiple solutions to this issue. If the first one solves your issue, then you don’t have to go to the next solution. For the best results, we recommend performing steps in the shown order.

Solution 1: Update QuickBooks to the latest release

You need to update your QuickBooks software to the latest release.

Solution 2: Update the Financial Institution directory to the most recent version

  • Open the Windows Explorer by pressing Windows + E
  • Navigate to the folder – C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX\Components\OLB\branding\filist.
  • Locate the txt file and right-click on it.
  • Select Rename from the drop-down list and change its name to old.
  • Right-click on the QuickBooks version to get the latest file.
  • Now, from the pop-up menu, select Save Target As/Save Link As.
  • On the Save As window, choose Desktop for the file location and click on Save.
  • (Optional) If the download finishes, click on Close.
  • Create a copy of the fidir.txt to correct the filist folder:
    • Right-click the fidir.txt file click on Copy from the drop-down options.
    • Open the Windows Explorer by pressing Windows + E
    • Navigate to the filist folder: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX\Components\OLB\branding\filist.
    • Now, press the CTRL + V keys to paste the file. The fidir.txt file will be visible in the desktop folder.
    • Open QuickBooks Desktop and set up the account.

Solution 3: Repair QuickBooks

  • Open the Windows Explorer by pressing Windows + E
  • From the menu bar of folder, click on Uninstall or change a program.
  • Choose QuickBooks from the program list and then click on Uninstall/Change.
  • From the QuickBooks installation wizard:
    • Click on Next and then select Repair.
    • Choose Next > Repair > Finish.

If you still get the issue even after repairing QuickBooks, you need to reinstall QuickBooks using clean install.

Solution 4: Edit the fidir.txt preferences

  • Open the Windows Explorer by pressing Windows + E
  • Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX\Components\OLB\branding\filist.
  • Locate the txt file from the folder and right-click on the same.
  • Click on Properties from the drop-down list.
  • Mark the read-only
  • Try to create an account for Bank Feeds again.
